It is now widely known that men who have erectile dysfunction (ED) are much more likely to suffer from the condition. In fact, research by researchers at the University of Southampton found that those who were also taking a medication known as Viagra (sildenafil) had about a 15- to 30-percent greater chance of experiencing ED. The findings were presented yesterday at the ASM International Conference on Sexual Health in Southampton, UK.
Viagra was the first approved for the treatment of ED in the UK. The drug was to be introduced in 1998 and has since become the most commonly used drug for treating the condition.
Dr David Brennan, of the University of Southampton's Department of Pharmacy, said: "This was a huge breakthrough for men in the UK, but the impact of Viagra on the general population was a little bit too dramatic. We were able to see a significant increase in the number of men who used it."
The findings were published today in the journalPsychosomatic Medicine. It found that Viagra users had a 69 percent higher likelihood of suffering from ED, compared with men who didn't use the medication.
The study, published in the journal, was conducted by researchers from the University of Southampton.
Dr Brennan said: "We have seen a dramatic increase in the number of men who used Viagra in the UK and in the country, and that is a huge achievement."
Dr Brennan said: "The findings show that the impact of Viagra on the general population is still pretty dramatic and is still very important to public health."
This article was updated since the publication of the study. It now includes further information on erectile dysfunction and Viagra.

Sildenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor that relaxes blood vessels in the penis to allow more blood flow and to increase the sensitivity of the erection.
Sildenafil is available in tablets from Dr. David Brennan, and he says it is the most widely used drug to treat ED.The study, which was funded by Pfizer, is an exploratory analysis of the use of sildenafil in treating erectile dysfunction.
Dr Brennan says: "We're hoping to improve our understanding of the relationship between sildenafil and ED and that will improve the overall clinical picture of this condition."
Dr Brennan said: "The research we're doing is very preliminary and there's still very little evidence that it is related to the relationship between sildenafil and ED."He added: "It is important to note that this is a big concern, and it's important to continue to make the use of sildenafil as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for ED and help to reduce the incidence and severity of ED as well as improving sexual function and quality of life for patients with ED."
Dr Brennan says: "We have to be very careful about what we do. There are many other medications available, and it's important to understand the risks and benefits of using these medicines. Viagra is not the answer for many men in this country."
He says: "The main question I have about Viagra and erectile dysfunction is that it has a lower incidence of common side effects of sildenafil compared with the use of sildenafil for other conditions.
"It has to be taken very carefully.
Dr Brennan said: "We're trying to figure out how Viagra works to improve sexual function and quality of life for patients with ED."
Sildenafil and Viagra are both used to treat erectile dysfunction and are the main drugs used to treat this condition.

24/7 Erectile dysfunctionErectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition characterized by the inability to obtain or keep an erection that is sufficient for sexual intercourse. It can be caused by various factors, including physical factors, psychological factors, and an underlying medical condition. This condition typically develops as a response to an underlying condition, such as stress, anxiety, or depression, but is sometimes seen in conjunction with other conditions.
Most men experience an erection during sexual activity within the normal range. However, there are some men who may not see the expected results. For some, occasional episodes of erectile dysfunction can be a sign of serious health problems. This is why ED treatment can depend on the reason for the erection.
ED can cause other conditions to worsen, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and polycythemia. Sometimes, these conditions can lead to serious complications, including blood clots and strokes.
If you experience any changes in your mood, behaviors, or mental health, it is crucial you seek medical attention. A psychiatric evaluation is typically required for men with ED.
